What is a browser?

by Shanna on July 18, 2009

Originally I had planned to write a post on which browsers people are using, comparing the benefits of each and denouncing IE6 for the evil that it is. Then Google posted this video: “What is a browser?” This man-on-the-street video gives some perspective to those of us who live in front of a computer. According to the response only 8% of the people in the video even know what a browsers is.

So what is a browser?

A browser is an application that allows you to view web pages. Which browser are you using?

Typically a Windows machine will have Internet Explorer installed. A Mac will probably have Safari. It’s enough to get you online and that is all most people care about. For those who care about internet security, speed and performance there are better options. Firefox an excellent choice, clean and fast with numerous add-ons for additional capabilities. Chrome is the fastest and cleanest, but lacks the add-ons that would make it a real powerhouse.
